        Let your Legs

        Play the Music

      • Make Music as You Dance

        Videos of Val's MusiNogi experiments

      • Description

MusiNogi is a Software+Hardware system designed to empower anyone who likes playing MIDI musical instruments to do it while dancing a variety of dance forms.

        Software

The Software component is a smartphone app which can be downloaded at the Apple AppStore for iPhone and iPad devices. The app is a MIDI controller & synthesizer, which features 60 different MIDI instruments. The app developed by Brainventions, Inc. is a member of an entire family of similar apps (MusiGigZ) designed for Making Music in Motion. Check out Sk8SoniX (a.k.a. MusiSk8s) for ice and roller skating, MusiShuZ for dancing and MusiRide for riding a bicycle and MusiVINGZ for walking and skating.

        Hardware

The Hardware component consists of a pair of leggings outfitted with 4 small pockets (on the thighs and the shins of each leg) and a pair of dance shoes with suede soles. Four sensor boards (a.k.a. MusiSenses) are inserted in the leggings pockets and two more sensor boards are attached to the bottom creases of the dance shoes. The MusiSenses contain 3D accelerometers, 3D gyroscopes and IR proximity sensors. The sensors are connected via Bluetooth to the MusiNogi app. Sensor data is streamed form each board to the app at 10Hz sampling rate. The app contains Machine Learning models trained to recognize time series of human activity - in this case the motion of the legs in space. These motions include flexions, extensions and rotations of the hips, knees and feet joins. The motions are categorized in 12 dance move categories and mapped to the 12 notes in a musical octave. The categories include dance steps that are common to a variety of dances including: hops, jumps, shuffle, crisscross, kick, lock, grapevine, Charleston and more. These steps are common to many dances such as Bulgarian and Irish folk dances, Shuffle, HipHop, LindyHop, Rock-N-Roll, Charleston, East and West Coast Swing, Argentine Tango, etc.

      • MusiSneakers

The MusiSneakers are modified SANYES USB Charging Light Up Shoes Sports LED Shoes Dancing Sneakers from Amazon. The sneakers come in all sizes and 5 distinct color designs. Each sneaker has a MusiSense embedded into the shoe sole. A power button located at the top-most shoe lace whole turns the MusiSense ON and OFF. A transparent dime-size circular window located on the bottom of each sole allows the built-in proximity sensors to detect when the sneakers are ON and OFF the floor. The musical notes played by the MusiNogi app are mapped to meaningfull color patterns of the LED strips. Don't walk or dance on un-even and dirty surfaces wince this may rupture the transparent cover of the sensors and damage them.

      • MusiNogi App

The MusiNogi app runs on iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 devices. It will be available soon for download at the Apple AppStore.

The main screen of the app shown on the screenshot is riddled with functionality. Here you can: Choose between data capture and predictions modes; Choose musical instruments for each leg; Observe in real-time the predictions of the 9 ML models in parallel; See and listen to the note(s) played by each leg; Look at videos of the steps in various dance forms; Monitor the octave in which each leg is playing; Change the steps-to-notes mapping and even Video record yourself as you play the MusiNogi app.

      • Steps to Notes Mapping

The mapping of dance steps to musical notes is presently in an early stage of research and development. Coming up with such mapping is where technology and artistic creativity come together since there are apparently countless dance steps and variations and only 12 notes in an octave.

Therefore, our objective is to come up with a many-to-many mapping. In other words, multiple different steps should trigger the same note. This is necessary so that dancers have many options how to play the same notes since not all dance steps go nicely and easily together in a choreography. In addition, one step should be able to trigger multiple notes. This is necessary since unlike the 10 fingers on the hand we have only two feet and we want to be able to play chords and arpeggios.

We are working on categorizing the most commonly performed dance steps from all dance families into 12 categories. Then we will map each of these categories, which are predicted dynamically in-real time by the MusiNogi's Machine Learning Models to actual musical notes. Inevitably and thankfully there will be more than one dance step mapped to a single note.

We do not think that there will be one "PERFECT" mapping. Each dance form might require its own specialized mapping. As illustrated in the screenshot, MusiNogi has a built-in user-friendly GUI, which allows users to do the mapping as they see fit in addition to a built-in default mapping.

Please stay tuned for further developments on this topic.

        Changing MIDI Instruments

To change MIDI instrument: tap on the instrument image on the main screen. You can play the same or two different instruments - one for each leg.

        Note Loudness: Piano Forte

In the present version of the MusiNogi app there is NO way to dynamically change the loudness of each note being played. In the next versions the loudness will most probably be controlled by the force (acceleration) with which individual dance steps are performed. Some dances are more hoppy like Bulgarian and Irish folk and others are smoother like Argentine tango. So you can mix and match.

      • App Settings

Simplicity and functionality under your hips

        Test App Functionality

Open the MusiNogi app on your smart phone. Put on the MusiPants and MusiShoes. Switch on the MusiSenses. A list of all 6 wearables should appear on the MusiNogi app screen. Pair the 6 wearables with the iPhone/iPad by tapping on the [connect] button for each of the 6 wearables. Make sure the Multiple Connect Switch on the Top is ON. When you have all 6 wearables connected the [START] button will be enabled. Tap the Start button and you will enter the app's main screen. There are may control buttons and info icons here. Tap the info button to get information on the functionality of the controls.

        Play Music as You Dance

Now you are ready to play music with the MusiNogi system. Start walking, jogging, running or making dance steps and you should hear various notes being played. Initially this will be all at random since you have not learned yet the mapping between your dance steps and the musical notes. Don't worry! This is coming up next. Like with any musical instrument it will take time and a lot of practice to figure it out, and even more time and more practice to perfect you skills.

        Language Localization

The MusiNogi app supports 18 of the most popular world languages including: EN, AR, BG, BN, CS, DE, EL, ES, FR, HE, HI, HU, IT, JA, KO, PT, RU and ZH. To change the app's language to one of your choice follow the instructions in the Help section of the app.

      • How to Play

Let your legs play the music

        Making Rhythms

Unlike a regular piano keyboard, MusiNogi plays notes when your foot is off the ground. In other words, if both of your feet are on the ground NO notes will be played. The speed with which you move your feet off the ground will determine the tempo of the music you play and the time the free leg(s) is off the ground will determine how long a particular note is sustained.

        Creating Melodies

The melodic component of the music you make with the MusiNogi app is based on the mapping between dance steps and musical notes. Each of the 12 notes in an octave can be played by multiple dance steps, which gives the MusiNogi player tremendous possibilities. The mappings are currently in the stage of intense Research and Development. Stay tuned.

        Switching Octaves

You can easily switch the octave in which the legs notes played by waving your palm over the proximity sensors on the thighs. Wave over the left thigh to decrease the octave number or wave over the right thigh to increase the octave number.

      • Warnings

Any damage to the sensor boards is covered only by the manufacturers warranty.

        Safety First

Make all necessary adjustments of sensors ahead of time while in a stationary position and not when dancing. Play music only when it is safe. Always look ahead where you are going. Do NOT look at or re-adjust the sensors while walking so that you don't accidentally bump into things.

        Recommendations

Using the MusiNogi system is RECOMMENDED for dancing with CAUTION, since an accidental trip and fall may result in an injury. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for dancers of all ages who love to make music.
